MimioStudio Gradebook Set Up

Tracy Tishion's picture

We just received the MimioVote system and I'd like to set up the gradebook to begin doing simple assessments with my students. How do I start? We do have some instructions but I could use more detailed step by step directions.

Answer:

The MimioVote system is a great addition to your classroom regiment of interactive assessments and instruction to use with your students. There are a number of Ask a Master responses on the gradebook that you can take a look at if you simply go to the Ask a Master section and type in the search box the word Mimio gradebook. There is also a very thorough Quick Learn recording of the whole set up process which can be found by following this link: https://mimio.boxlight.com/quick-learn-recordings/. There are multiple training recordings on this page so just scroll down the page to locate the Gradebook recording. Feel free to watch any of the other recordings for tips and suggestions. There are even Quick Learn LIVE sessions that you can sign up for at this link: https://mimio.boxlight.com/quick-learn-overview/ which provide immediate feedback to questions you might have as well as resources and samples that are provided to participants for free. Enjoy using this new interactive tool in your classroom

PDF Orientation in MimioStudio Notebook

Tracy Tishion's picture

I can't seem to change the orientation of a PDF file that I inserted into a notebook page. Can it be rotated?

Answer:

There is no way to directly change the orientation of a PDF file from inside MimioStudio Notebook. That would need to be done prior to inserting it into the notebook. If you don't have access to the original PDF file outside the notebook then you might try the following:
1. Save the imported PDF page in Mimio Notebook as a JPG file.
2. Save with the original orientation, size, and resolution.
3. Next, drag the saved JPG file into your Gallery as an image. Give it a name if you'd like.
4. Lastly, drag the image file from the Gallery back onto a Notebook page. Select the image and use the rotate handle to rotate the image to desired orientation.

Thanks for a great question and as always, should you have the time, check out the many tips and suggestions that can be found in Ask a Master!

Writing on a PDF file inside or outside the notebook.

Tracy Tishion's picture

Is it better to import/insert a PDF file to write on it or should I keep it outside of the notebook and just use a feature from the toolbar to write on it?

Answer:

Annotating or writing on PDF inside or outside of a notebook page is really what you prefer and how you'd like to save the annotated PDF. If you use the file outside of the notebook, you'll need to open it and position the file to an acceptable size on the screen. Once you use the "screen annotation" tool from the toolbar, it freezes the file so you can write on it but you won't be able to manipulate the file (scroll up or down) because screen annotation freezes the screen. When you are done, simply press ESC on your keyboard or right click and select “CLOSE.” You will find a copy of your annotated page in your Gallery inside the Screen Annotations folder of the notebook. If you insert the PDF file into your notebook page, the whole file will resize to fit the screen. Write on it, mark it up and now the PDF becomes part of your lesson and you can continue to additional pages in the notebook or just save the mimio file to your computer for future use. As always, should you get the chance, check out the many other tips and suggestions found on MimioConnect.

Creating a Template

Tracy Tishion's picture

I have a few math pages like clock faces and fractions that I'm continually recreating on new pages. I know I can copy notebook pages but is there a way to create a template to place in the gallery for future lessons of these pages?

Answer:

You are correct that pages can easily be copied but they, too, can be made into templates. Once you have created that notebook page that you'd like to use in the future, simply click and drag the thumbnail image of the page to the gallery which is open and the template folder is open as well. You will drop the page into the template folder. Now you can right click on the image in the template folder, choose properties, and you'll be able to rename the template to a more appropriate label. As always, if you get the chance, check out the other tips and suggestions found in MimioConnect Ask a Master.

MimioTeach With Green Light But Not Working

Tracy Tishion's picture

My MimioTeach is on and there's a blinking green light but it doesn't respond. What could be going on?

Answer:

That blinking green light means that the MimioTeach is looking for the MimioStudio notebook. If your notebook is open and the light is blinking, then this means that the MimioTeach device needs a firmware update. To do this, attach the MimioTeach device/bar directly to your computer via the USB cable included with the bar. Once connected the update will run automatically. When done, remove the cable from the computer and reconnect it to the adapter on wall outlet and the light should return to a solid green color.

End of Year Clean Up and Summer

Tracy Tishion's picture

I'm new to Mimio this year and am wondering how to store my equipment for the summer and how can I work on lessons over the summer if I don't have my equipment?

Answer:

This is a good question with a few suggestions for you based on your school situation. Some school districts have guidelines as to what to do with technology at the end of the year. The first thing I'd recommend is check with fellow colleagues to see if there is some procedures in place. Some IT departments collect, label, and hold onto teachers' laptops and equipment to do updates and clean equipment while others let the teachers lock up these things in a classroom closet if that's available. If you are storing equipment in your room, then please make sure you remove any batteries that are used in the equipment. This will prevent them from heating up and melting inside the devices over the hot summer months. If you are able to take your classroom computer (laptop) home then you'll already have the MimioStudio software on your computer to continue to use and create lessons. If you can't take the computer home and have another one at home then you'll be able to download a limited, home version of the MimioStudio software from the website and create lessons that way. You can save them to a USB/flash drive or if you have cloud storage, save them there. Whatever your district protocols are, just be proactive and ask any questions you might have to make sure your equipment can be stored safely and securely, to be ready for you to hit the ground running for the new school year!
